Mia Hamm Health Secrets

Retired professional American soccer player and author of “Go For the Goal: A Champion's Guide to Winning in Soccer and Life”, Mia Hamm stays healthy off the field and she reveals how! Hamm, a two-time olympic gold medalist and FIFA Women’s World Cup winner, was born in Selma, Alabama on March 17, 1972. Besides being the first and second recipient to ever receive the FIFA World Player of the Year award, in 1987 she was the youngest-ever member of the U.S. Women's National team. She was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2007 and 3 others in years earlier. Hamm, a founding member of the Washington Freedom (American professional soccer club) is truly considered one of the world’s most famous and most accomplished female soccer players in the world.

Nomar Garciaparra

Now retired from the world of soccer, Mia is 44 years old, married to retired MLB baseball player Nomar Garciaparra and has three small children at home. In her most recent interview in the fall of last year, Mia Hamm shares how she stays healthy and gives insight on how she is able to keep her children healthy and happy along with her. Having a set of twin girls and a little boy all under the age of 10, you can imagine that she still gets her fair share of workout time running after them. She says that “Life off the field has been just as demanding and hectic as training for the Olympics or world titles." She goes on to say that even though she has accomplished many things in her life, her family is what she is most proud of. "Having a healthy, happy family is everything," she says and she truly supports her children in all that they do while teaching them about life and sports. Mia admits that things are different now that she is a full-time mommy but she enjoys spending active playtime with her kids and doing activities such as playing catch, kicking the ball around and sometimes just simply going to the park to play for a bit. She also believes in maintaining a healthy mental health and is consistently staying up to do date with all the latest health trends recommended by her healthcare physician. She uses vitamins and supplements to help maintain a healthy lifestyle along with proper diet and exercise.

Workout three times a week

Mia says that doing cardio work before weight training is the way to go. She explains that this keeps your body warm which promotes good blood circulation and flexibility in muscles. Ultimately, this is good because it keeps you from straining and pulling those same muscles. She says that while some people do their exercises in a fast or rapid succession, it's not necessary but of course if you have stamina to make it work, it helps with the effectiveness of the training. Just remember not to overexert yourself by using bad form. She is a firm believer that if you are working out, then you should work out responsibly and this means always using good form. She recommends working out approximately 3 days a week for the average person. She states that working out every single day is too much unless you are an élite athlete. Taking days off in between your workouts gives your body enough time to recover and begin again. This is the key to doing your body right and getting the results you seek. For those that like doing multiple sit-ups and stomach crunches in a hurry, Hamm recommends that you should "Put quality in front of quantity. Concentrate on the quality and intensity, not the repetition of what you are doing." She goes on to say that a crunch doesn't have to be a big movement to produce big results. Make sure your stomach muscles do the work, not your back or legs. With the right form, you should see results doing only three to four sets of your 15-20 reps a day."
