Health has become a forefront issue even in pop culture today. One can get on Instagram and see a plethora of insta-famous, D-list celebrities advertising the latest in detox teas and other various methods for weight loss. But what sets those who can maintain a healthy weight apart from those who struggle with weight issues? For one, genetics can play a major role in weight loss and overall health. Diabetes, as well as other metabolic disorders, have been found to be inheritable within families.

What if I don't have perfect genes - how can I lose weight?

For those who have not been blessed with perfect genes that give one the perfect figure or perfectly toned and chiseled muscles, there are many things you can do to attain these physical attributes. The most important thing is a healthy diet. And, with use of the word, diet, let it be known this has nothing to do with the South Beach diet or Atkins. Diet refers to the overall intake of food that a person ingests. Your diet is one of the most important things in maintaining health and weight. One should have a healthy and well-rounded diet consisting of lots of fruits and vegetables, protein from healthy sources such as fish, poultry, and nuts, and yes, even carbohydrates! It is very important to remember to eat healthy carbs, however. You want to focus on finding whole wheat and grains. Brown rice is a much healthier choice than white rice. You can also get whole wheat pasta. Enriched flour in many white breads and traditional pastas can be hard for the human body to process and can make weight loss and weight management much more difficult. And let's not forget the importance of dairy products. There has been lots of hoopla surrounding dairy products in progressive health issues. Many people are switching to almond milk or coconut milk for calcium intake, but it is important to get some dairy products into your diet whether it be through lower fat cheeses, yogurt, etc. Dairy products have also been known to contribute to weight issues, so it is important to look for low fat dairy products. Greek yogurt is a favorite among consumers for a low fat and healthy dairy option.

So burning calories is the key?

It is also very important to monitor caloric intake. If one is consuming more calories than they are burning in a day, then it will be impossible to lose weight. And speaking of burning calories, exercise is another top priority in managing weight and health. There are so many forms of exercise, from jogging to swimming to even walking. Simply walking for 10-15 minutes a day can dramatically improve your health. Breaks at work are a great time to step out for a nice walk. It can also help your mental health during a stressful work week. Aerobic exercise is ideal for losing weight, and it has been found that even short bursts of aerobic exercise can have dramatic effects. So, if you are someone that dreads the gym or working out, in general, you should, at the very least, try to burst out in some intense activity for just 2 minutes a day. You can do it! Get yourself out there and explore all of the amazingly healthy food and the many different ways to exercise and keep in shape!
